Selection and Application of Insulation Materials for New Energy Vehicle Cables
Thu May 09, 2024 11:10 am
Cable is an important power transmission equipment, and its manufacturing involves a variety of insulating materials, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), halogen-free low-smoke polyolefins, fluoroplastics, silicone rubber, nitrile rubber, ethylene propylene rubber and nylon. Among them, polyethylene also includes different types such as low-density (LDPE), medium-density (MDPE), high-density (HDPE), and linear low-density (LLDPE).
XLPE uses high-density polyethylene as the main raw material. Through the action of high-energy rays or chemical initiators, the linear macromolecular structure is transformed into a spatial network structure. This cross-linking process significantly improves the performance of polyethylene materials. Compared with ordinary polyethylene, XLPE has better environmental stress cracking resistance, heat resistance and thermal strength, heat aging resistance, creep deformation resistance, higher tear resistance, notch cracking resistance, electrical insulation, flame retardancy, barrier properties, gasoline resistance and aromatics resistance, and also overcomes the sensitivity of ordinary polyethylene to fillers.
Special-purpose materials are also added to the insulation layer and sheath of the cable. For example, TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is a material between rubber and plastic, and its rigidity can be measured by elastic modulus. TPU has a wide hardness range, from Shore A 60 to Shore D 80, and has high elasticity throughout the hardness range. TPU is flexible in a wide temperature range of -40~120℃, does not contain plasticizers, has good tolerance to oils and many solvents, and also has good weather resistance and excellent resistance to high-energy rays. TPU has excellent wear resistance, tear resistance and bending strength, and has the advantages of high tensile strength, high elongation and low long-term compression permanent deformation. Therefore, TPU is widely used in daily necessities, sporting goods, toys, decorative materials and other fields. Halogen-free flame-retardant TPU can also replace soft PVC to meet the environmental protection requirements of more and more fields. Selecting high-quality materials to produce cables can promote the development and improvement of wire and cable manufacturing processes, and improve the product quality and production efficiency of cables.
